Tetzlaff Accelerated Learning Academy, a Golden Bell Award winner, is Los Angeles County’s first Magnet Middle School to offer Pre-Advanced Placement courses for all students. Our mission is to provide students with a distinctive curriculum that is both rigorous and relevant in order to prepare students to meet the demands of Advanced Placement courses in high school.
Tetzlaff’s Pre-Advanced Placement magnet program continues to set high academic standards in order for our students to achieve in high school and beyond. It is our belief that the building of a college-going culture begins before high school and persists throughout a student’s academic career.
Our end goal is that program participants will graduate from high school and enter college well prepared to pursue careers of their own choosing, and to be leaders in their communities.
Pre-Advanced Placement curriculum for:
- Math - Our Pre-Advanced Placement math curriculum focuses on building a strong conceptual base that helps students to become flexible thinkers, able to apply the mathematics they have learned to a rapidly changing world.
- English - The ability to think, read, and write clearly and effectively lies at the heart of every Pre-Advanced Placement English course at Tetzlaff and extends throughout the curriculum.
- Science - Our science Pre-Advanced Placement curriculum seeks to give students a firm foundation in science, as well as an understanding of the interrelationships among the different branches of science.
- History - History courses at Tetzlaff strive to build an understanding of and an appreciation for civilizations of the past and present.
- Electives - One of the school’s foremost curricular objectives is a balanced program in which the arts play a significant and well-integrated role.
- Band - Tetzlaff has consistently been recognized as having one of the elite Middle School Marching Band, ColorGuard and Drum Major Programs in all of Southern California
- Physical Education - Our Pre-Advanced Placement curriculum focuses on the “sound body-sound mind” philosophy of wellness to help our students make better transitions during this period of growth.

Tetzlaff Accelerated Learning Academy, located in the City of Cerritos, serves 600 students in grades seven and eight on a traditional calendar system. Tetzlaff Accelerated Learning Academy is dedicated to ensuring the academic success of every student and providing a safe and comprehensive educational experience that will prepare our students to succeed in a 21st century global society.
Tetzlaff Academy has been acknowledged as a National Blue Ribbon School and received several California Distinguished School awards. The California School Boards Association recently awarded Tetzlaff a Golden Bell Award for the Media Broadcasting Program at our school.
School Programs
Students attending Tetzlaff Accelerated Learning Academy will benefit from a
Pre Advanced Placement (Pre AP) program that is dedicated to a continuing history of academic excellence. Tetzlaff continues to pave the way in standards based instruction, high expectations, and creating a culture of excelling students. Pre AP rigor allows core teachers to give standards based instruction in greater depth and detail with high expectations for student accountability and responsibility. The primary goal is to prepare our students for advanced placement course choices when they enter high school, which we believe will ensure their likeliness to enter college.
College Board, a mission-driven not-for-profit organization that connects students to college success and opportunity, designs our Pre-Advanced Placement curriculum. Each year, College Board helps more than seven million students prepare for a successful transition to college. Tetzlaff will offer Springboard, a program designed by College Board for grades 6-12. It is the only research-based, pre-AP® program designed to prepare students for AP® and college success through integrated instructional materials, formative assessments and sustained professional development.
Our Broadcast Journalism class creates the “Student News” using information and events pertinent to our school community. The television broadcast is managed entirely by students from interview, to production, to broadcast. Thanks to Channel 5’s news anchor Stan Chambers , who is a frequent visitor at Tetzlaff, for a fruitful partnership between the Station and the school. Tetzlaff is the recipient of the Golden Bell award for our Red Carpet Media Festival, which is an event for students to showcase student produced public service announcements, photos and media informational. Officials from the City of Cerritos, District administrators, and community members participate every year.
Peace-Builders - A school wide discipline program that promotes student accountability and responsibility. Each day begins with our pledge: “I am a Peace Builder. I pledge to praise people, to give up put downs, to seek wise people, notice and speak up about hurts I have caused, to right wrongs. I will build peace at home, in school, and in my community each day.” Peace Builders has been instrumental in creating a universal language for our students. Students teach peace to students. Peace Builders is instrumental to our school community.
College Bound - College Bound offers public school students in grades 8-12 academic enrichment and resources to prepare for and succeed in college. Founded in 1991, the organization offers tutoring, mentoring, ACT/SAT preparation, and academic and career guidance. Tetzlaff will offer a 3-week math enrichment program during the summer, run by College Bound, aimed at increasing the mastery of Algebraic fundamentals.
Tetzlaff Accelerated Learning Academy has long been recognized as having one of the elite Marching Band, Color Guard and Drum Major Programs in all of Southern California. Under the dedicated and skillful leadership of its director this entertainment unit continues to impress music adjudicators throughout the state with its high level of performance excellence accomplished by its dedicated students. These students consistently out work their competitors, including most four-year high schools, at each event in which they appear. This year the musical group of 88 students has earned 1st Place or Sweepstakes wins in all events entered.
One of Tetzlaff’s foremost curricular objectives is a balanced program in which the arts play a significant and well-integrated role. Spanish, Computer Science, Woodshop, Industrial Arts, and Art History are offered.
